The AHRC Community Residence Program creates a family-like
environment for the men and women who live in our homes. With
the help of dedicated live-in houseparents, we can maximize each
individual's dignity, self worth, and independence. Suffolk AHRC
currently operates more than 25 homes in residential communities
throughout the county.
Two to nine adults live in each AHRC community residence (CR)
and IRA. With the help of agency professionals, they work together
and form their own new family and support systems. The men and
women who live in our CRs (also known as IRA's) value their adult
independence, and respond to it with increased responsibility and
raised self-esteem. Our community residence program maintains
and enhances the skills and abilities of its residents, giving them an
opportunity to shop, partake in leisure activities, and become part of
their community. CR Houseparents are assisted by a weekend relief
staff and peak hour support staff so that each resident's individual
needs can be met.
